Development of an agro-industrial value chain in the spice sector – Bolivia
In 1998, SOCODEVI launched a support project for the diversification of the main achievements 2,000 families growing oregano located in 20 municipalities have diversified their agricultural economic and productive activities of farmers in Chuquisaca, one of the poorest Departments in Bolivia, in order to increase family incomes.
In collaboration with farmers who are members of the AGROCENTRAL network of cooperatives, we took up an enormous challenge – identifying and cultivating new products that would be more profitable while working towards sustainability of the system and the natural resources. Strengthening the technical capacities of the farmers along with a strategic vision for setting up and anaging this new economic activity were the keys to success.
Today, the emergence of a new industry to produce, process and market spices, in particular oregano, has changed the lives of thousands of farming families.
