Entrepreneurship development program for FEDECOAG and FEDECOVERA (PRODEF)
The Entrepreneurship development program (PRODEF)’s main goal was the economic, administrative and financial consolidation of the Federación de Cooperativas de las Verapaces (FEDECOVERA) and its network of member organizations, as well as the Federación de Cooperativas Agrícolas (FEDECOAG).
A cooperative recipe to face up a colossal challenge
In the economic context, the positioning of small producers on international cardamom markets may seem unrealistic. However, through modern commercial strategies and by establishing a producer-to-client traceability system, the PRODEF project wanted to make FEDECOVERA a key player in the Guatemalan cardamom sector.
SOCODEVI’s recipe was the transfer of knowledge and know-how. At the heart of this approach: improvement of productivity and competitiveness of family businesses, environmental concern, real-time market follow-up and integration of a modern marketing approach.
Concrete actions for sustainable enrichment
The self-government of the supported organizations was the essential lever for the creation and distribution of local wealth.
To achieve this, SOCODEVI counted on efficient human resources: competent Canadian and Guatemalan leaders, while focusing on an approach that remains a family business for training programs. The PRODEF project also promoted the participation of FEDECOVERA in the most important international food fairs, as well as the development of niche markets through the implementation of certification systems.
The execution of annual business plans, fair and transparent redistribution of profits among producers, cooperatives and the Federation after each campaign and, of course, the development of direct relations (without intermediary) with foreign customers were also pillars of the success of the PRODEF project.
