Setting up of cooperatives for storage and marketing of grain
Project carried out by Socodevi in a consortium with the Canadian Cooperative Association (CCA) and the Institut de recherche et d’éducation pour les coopératives et mutuelles de l’Université de Sherbrooke (IRECUS). This initiative aims to remove the constraints faced by small and medium grain producers through the establishment of cooperatives of handling, storage, and marketing of grain, to enhance the commercial appeal of their grain and increase their market activities. La Coop fédérée and other Canadian agricultural cooperatives will provide advanced expertise throughout the project.
This project will provide the technical assistance required to organize the producers into efficient service cooperatives. Members may make purchases of quality inputs in groups, negotiate favorable credit conditions for production, establish a structure of purchase and sharing of tractors and machinery and have access to consulting services.
Also, the producers organized in cooperatives will have access to funding for the construction of storage facilities and processing of grain which will give added value to their crops and will increase profits. Thus, training and coaching will be provided on major issues related to the launching of a grain center: grain classification, use and maintenance of equipment, health and safety at work, negotiation and marketing, transport and logistics, etc.
In addition, the project will work with two universities in order to update their teachings on the management and administration of agricultural service cooperatives. Also, a training program will allow Ukrainian trainers to develop their knowledge on cooperative management. Young trained professionals will be able to contribute to the development of the national cooperative movement.
