Improved living conditions for rural populations in Soc Trang Province – Vietnam

From 2001 to 2008, SOCODEVI carried out a vast support program for the agricultural sector and local development in one of the poorest provinces in southern Vietnam. The challenge was enormous – raise more than 25,000 individuals out of poverty. In the province of Soc Trang we led a program to improve the living conditions of rural populations, targeting the inhabitants of 16 communes and 4 districts in the Mekong Delta region.

To deal with the challenge, SOCODEVI relied on the creation and strengthening of associative style organizations in agricultural areas and on the transfer of Canadian expertise and knowledge. With the collaboration of the government of Vietnam represented by the Provincial People’s Committee from the Soc Trang province, action in the field focused on the creation or support of income generating activities such as agriculture and livestock production, dairy production, investment in education and health and of course strengthening local competencies.

Results

  • The cooperative Evergrowth created as part of our intervention has 1,500 member families now producing 22,000 kg of milk per day and who own dairy herds that total 4,000 cows, none of which were in existence in 2001. The enterprise has become a development model for the sector for the whole country.
  • Approximately 5,000 families saw their revenues increase in a significant manner.
  • 12 health centres have already been constructed and are operational and 48 primary schools have been renovated under the SOCODEVI project.
