FAÉD

Women and Youth in Action for Sustainable Ecosystems

Project Summary

The project Women and Youth in Action for Sustainable Ecosystems (FAÉD) brings new momentum to communities in the Sahel region of Burkina Faso. This initiative aims to strengthen the resilience of women and young people in vulnerable situations, while contributing to biodiversity conservation for the benefit of local populations. Project activities encourage plant and animal diversity and promote inclusive and equitable governance of natural resources.

Objectives

  • Adapting to the impacts of climate change
  • Biodiversity conservation
  • Economic empowering for women and youth
  • Inclusive and equitable governance of natural resources

Results and impact

  • 43,000 seedlings of 12 local species produced by 15 supported nursery operators.
  • Seedling survival rates: 88 % (over 4 000 trees, Lycée Professionnel Idrissa Yaya site) and 80% (over 5 000 seedlings, Bon Pasteur site).
  • Improved cookstoves distributed: over 900 internally displaced women received improved cookstoves (initial target: 350), a completion rate of 279 %. Since the start of the project, 1036 internally displaced women have benefited from this technology.
  • Structured communal unions: four unions in Gorom-Gorom, 18 in the process of formalization in Dori.

Testimonials

“For years, I have worked in the shadows, without ever receiving support. Today, I feel heard and valued.”
At 65, Hamidou Maïga, from the village of Korizena, has devoted his life to nature for more than thirty years. Long on his own, he tirelessly maintained a small family tree nursery despite limited means and lack of support.
Everything changed when he attended a training session under the Women and Youth in Action for Sustainable Ecosystems (FAÉD) Project in Dori. With this support, he gained new knowledge, received production equipment, and regained the motivation to grow his activity.
“Together, we can fight deforestation and bring back life to our lands.”

“For five years, managing firewood was a real headache. I was spending a lot, losing time, and the smoke made the work difficult.”
In February 2025, everything changed. Thanks to the Women and Youth in Action for Sustainable Ecosystems (FAÉD) Project and the Provincial Directorate of the Environment, I discovered improved cookstoves. I started with two, then four.
My firewood consumption has dropped by 50%, cooking is faster, there is no more smoke, and I even reuse ash and charcoal.
“Today, I’m an ambassador for improved cookstoves! We save time, money, and we protect the environment.”

  • Vallea Nina
Restaurant owner at the Dori heliport

“When I arrived at the host site with my family, life was very difficult. Firewood was scarce, and the fire risk was constant.”
Thanks to the FAÉD Project, Fatimata was trained in making and using improved cookstoves. She helped other families build them, transforming daily life at the site.
The impacts: less wood consumption, less smoke, better health, and no fires reported.
“These stoves have changed our lives. We breathe better, we feel safer, and we protect our environment.”
