For rural communities in the countries where Socodevi works, participating in forest management is essential to ensuring resource sustainability, protecting biodiversity, and diversifying economic activities. Supported by the expertise of Quebec’s forestry co-operatives, we helped strengthen agroforestry co-operative enterprises in Honduras by increasing the added value of forest products. Improving the living conditions of families through the rational and sustainable use of forest resources lies at the heart of this approach.
As part of the COOPFORH project, our work with organizations belonging to the regional co-operative CORAMEHL and the federation FEHCAFOR focused on transferring management tools, increasing production capacity, developing forest management plans, and improving timber commercialization.
Enhanced economic and organizational performance enabled dozens of Honduran co-operatives to earn FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification for their community forest management.
Supported by 26 co-operatives equipped with government-approved management plans, 64,565 hectares of natural forest were managed sustainably. Meanwhile, FEHCAFOR marketed 11,378 tonnes of pine resin since 2010, generating a cumulative revenue of CAD 6.9 million directly benefiting member producer families. The result: better protected forests, stable incomes, and a strengthened rural economy.
