In Vietnam, we have improved the living conditions of thousands of agricultural producers by supporting the creation and strengthening of inclusive, sustainable, and profitable co-operative enterprises. Developing five model co-operatives aligned with market needs across various value chains has been central to our approach.
Socodevi designed value-chain-specific training programs to help farmers meet national and international market requirements, while improving their incomes and the productivity of their family farms. Climate-adaptation measures were also integrated directly into agricultural plots.
In 2021, three fruit value-chain co-operatives—representing nearly 900 families—were selected by provincial authorities to participate in Project 167, an initiative of the Vietnamese Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI). This program aims to promote and replicate the co-operative model (inclusive, lasting, and sustainable) nationwide by 2025.
Through their participation, the Ben Tre Green Pomelo, Evergreen, and Thanh Binh co-operatives supported by the VCED project gained access to financial assistance to strengthen staff capacities, improve production, expand markets, enhance environmental management, and increase inter-cooperation. These co-operatives and their members now serve as drivers of co-operative development across Vietnam, fully engaged in inclusive and green growth.
For Socodevi, VCED is truly mission accomplished! The project represents years of policy advocacy and strategic collaboration carried out during more than two decades of presence and multiple initiatives in Vietnam. It is a testament to the strength of our network, partners, and the impact of our actions.
Through the VCED project, Socodevi’s Farmer Field School approach mobilized over 150,000 participants and supported the growth of three thriving fruit co-operatives, which commercialized more than 1,148 tons of products. Three modern processing plants meeting HACCP standards ensured high quality, while 95% of families clearly recognized the benefits of joining their co-operative.
In addition:
The ripple effects extended far beyond farms: 4,500 policymakers received awareness training on co-operative education and development, and 12 provinces adopted new measures fostering a more supportive environment for co-operatives.
The result: stronger value chains, more resilient communities, and a faster-growing local economy.
