Toward a Better Future Thanks to Tara

Context

Through the PROMAVI project, Socodevi achieved a remarkable milestone by developing an entirely new agricultural value chain in Bolivia: tara. This plant has multiple uses — its pods are used to tan high-quality leather, while its seeds hold valuable cosmetic and food properties.

A Closer Look at the Project

Description

The most significant achievement in developing this new value chain is undoubtedly the construction of a 2,200 m² tara pod processing plant — the first of its kind in Bolivia!

The Boltrade processing facility will allow more than 2,000 farming families to transform the tara they cultivate, increasing value, income, and market opportunities.

Objectives

Implemented in partnership with Santé Monde (CCISD), the PROMAVI project also helped remote communities in the Chuquisaca department gain access to safe drinking water. Awareness activities were carried out to explain the health risks associated with consuming contaminated water.

Our efforts supported the design, co-financing, and establishment of local systems for potable water access and management — systems that have since been adopted by several municipalities across Chuquisaca.

Testimonials

“We have improved our self-esteem. PROMAVI’s training sessions help us become strong leaders and support our colleagues in the community so they can overcome their fear of sharing their opinions, speaking up, and participating in all activities!”
