The year has hardly begun and SOCODEVI has put on not one, but two events to launch its activities in Chad. Chadian women resilient to climate change (TRACC) was officially launched in the capital, N’Djamena, on January 15, and in Mongo, in the Guera region, on January 22.
With support from Global Affairs Canada over five years, TRACC focuses on furthering rural women’s climate resilience to bring sustainable change to the lives of thousands of people in the Guera region.
At the N’Djamena event, Canada’s ambassador to Chad, Lorraine Anderson, talked about the importance of projects like TRACC to showcase SOCODEVI’s and Canada’s commitment to international cooperation and sustainable development in the Sahel. She reminded attendees of the impact of climate change on African countries, and mentioned TRACC as an example of a project that can help rural communities in their climate change response.
Chad’s minister of agricultural production and transformation, Keda Balla, also spoke. He referred to the devastating floods in the recent past and the important role TRACC plays in organizing producers in agricultural associations and cooperatives, as per national policy. The project also focuses on improving agricultural water infrastructure and reducing climate risk.
In attendance at the Mongo event were a number of important figures. Guera governor Mahamat Togou Tchohimi was there with his entire cabinet, in addition to the minister of agricultural production and industrialization, and administrative and traditional authorities. Local press was also there to cover the event.
Women members of partner co-ops came out to both events to talk about the positive experience they’ve had with TRACC. They spoke about how TRACC is an essential opportunity for them to improve their living conditions and play a more active role in the local economy.
No doubt about it, SOCODEVI and TRACC are making waves in Chad! Between the two events, we drew the presence and support of nearly 300 attendees, guests and dignitaries.
We can’t wait to see what TRACC accomplishes in the coming years.
