Chad

Our impact

Context

A Sahelian country highly exposed to the effects of climate change, Chad is facing accelerated land degradation, irregular rainfall, recurrent droughts and, paradoxically, increasingly frequent flooding events. These climate shocks, combined with chronic food insecurity, are severely undermining the livelihoods of rural households.

Rural women play a central role in agricultural production, processing and household nutrition, while continuing to face persistent inequalities in access to productive resources, training, markets and decision-making. In this context, Socodevi supports women’s co-operatives and farmers’ organizations to strengthen climate resilience, improve agricultural incomes and secure household nutrition, particularly for women and children.

Objectives and expected results

  • Strengthen the climate resilience of rural communities to droughts and floods.
  • Structure inclusive, high-performing and well-governed co-operatives.
  • Economically empower women and young women through leadership, training and access to markets.
  • Sustainably improve food security and the nutritional status of children and pregnant or breastfeeding women.
  • Prevent and manage community conflicts related to access to natural resources.

Areas of activity

  • Sustainable agriculture and climate change adaptation
  • Development of co-operative enterprises
  • Gender equality and women’s empowerment
  • Environment and nature-based solutions
  • Nutrition and food security
  • Local governance and conflict prevention
  • Agricultural value chains: groundnuts, sesame, market gardening

Results and impacts

Climate resilience and agricultural productivity

  • Through Socodevi Farmer Field Schools, 377 producers adopted climate-smart agricultural practices, improving yields, water management and soil fertility while strengthening agrobiodiversity. Biological land restoration activities and the development of market gardening perimeters further enhanced the resilience of production systems.

Women’s economic empowerment and leadership

  • The TRACC project trained 706 women in leadership, the prevention of gender-based violence and positive masculinities. Economic support (approximately XAF 35.7 million) strengthened collective marketing, bargaining power and access to income within co-operatives.

Co-operative structuring and inclusive governance

  • 30 co-operatives in the groundnut and sesame value chains were supported in their legal structuring, governance and management. The project also supported the transformation of 15 groups into simplified co-operatives, in collaboration with local authorities, improving institutional recognition and access to markets.

Nutrition and food security

  • The RERESA project improved the nutrition of 150,000 children through the production and marketing of 300 tonnes of fortified flour, nutrition awareness-raising for 17,575 people, and the distribution of hygiene kits. These actions primarily target children aged 6–23 months and pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Testimonials

“Before, our market gardening activities were rudimentary and yields were low. Thanks to the Socodevi Farmer Field Schools under the TRACC project, we learned agricultural techniques adapted to climate change. Today, our yields are increasing and our lives are improving.”

  • President, Alpha de Baro Co-operative

“Thanks to the childcare facility set up by Socodevi, women can now take part in training sessions and work on market gardening sites without worrying about childcare. This has completely changed our community.”

  • Ms. Amina Hassan
    Secretary General, CTS Co-operative
