Ukraine

Our impact

Context

Since 2008, Socodevi and its Ukrainian partners have been working to professionalize dairy and grain value chains, strengthen the co-operative movement and, since 2022, increase the resilience of rural families—particularly women and displaced people—facing war.

Before the intervention, small producers struggled with limited market access, low prices, and weak collective organization.

Objectives and expected results

  • Professionalize dairy and grain producers through training, investments, and infrastructure
  • Promote gender equality in co-operative governance
  • Increase the economic and social resilience of rural families affected by the conflict
  • Strengthen climate adaptation and food security in dairy, horticulture, grain, and honey value chains

Sectors of activity

  • Agriculture: milk and dairy products, cereals and grains, fruits and vegetables
  • Beekeeping
  • Women’s economic empowerment and gender equality
  • Inclusive and sustainable economic growth
  • Climate change and environmental sustainability

Results and impacts

Dairy sector – Increased power and income

  • Over 150 collection points, 100 family barns, and one co-operative plant (NABIL) processing 25,000 L/day
  • 71% of elected governance positions are held by women, which has helped professionalize the sector and improve prices for small farms

Grains – Access to processing and markets

  • Creation of 2 grain co-operatives and a 12,800-tonne co-operative elevator
  • Membership growth of +385% and a 23-fold increase in the area cultivated by members, along with significant improvements in management practices and environmental sustainability

Resilience in a context of war

  • 17 co-operatives supported (in dairy, fruit and berries, vegetables, and grains), and more than 1,500 people, including 843 families, trained and assisted
  • 94% of beneficiaries increased their income or reduced their losses thanks to economic support programs (equipment, small-scale infrastructure, value-added processing) and the integration of explosive safety

Inclusive and connected value chains

  • Development of co-operative services (laboratories, mills, sorting and packaging lines, refrigerated delivery) and compliance and quality tools to reach national markets
  • International co-operative networks such as FCL (Canada), Co-op Group UK, and Co-op Alleanza 3.0 (Italy) have been mobilized to promote fair trade and technical exchanges between co-operatives
