Chuquisaca is one of the poorest regions of Bolivia. In order to improve the living conditions of the population, SOCODEVI supported a diversification of economic and production activities among farm families, thus fostering an increase in their incomes. For SOCODEVI, and members of the AGROCENTRAL network of cooperatives with whom the project was carried out, the challenge was an important one: to identify and produce more profitable crops while prioritizing climate-intelligent methods and staying mindful of ecosystem and natural resource sustainability.
The project has owed its success to collaborative work with all stakeholders, a participatory approach that facilitated synergy, and innovative methods for capacity building among the beneficiaries. Today, the emergence of a new production, processing and commercialization industry for spices, and for oregano in particular, has positively impacted the lives of thousands of farming families. Moreover, oregano has become the region’s leading export.
