FEDECOVERA, a federation of cooperatives in Guatemala, wanted to diversify its economic activities in order to strengthen its member cooperatives’ economic development. With the support of forestry cooperatives in Quebec, SOCODEVI assisted in creating and developing market channels for forestry and cardamom within this organization in the Verapaces region.
We set up a forestry department, including plant production, reforestation, geomatics, land planning and processing services, as well as activities ranging from cardamom packaging to export. Thanks to these efforts, and families’ mobilization to boost reforestation, a culture of agro-forestry has developed. Today, FEDECOVERA continues to grow and stands as the world’s top producer and exporter of organic cardamom.
